Study Abroad and fulfill Global Health Minor Requirements

Global Education Oregon (GEO) offers a “Global Health, Development and Service-Learning in Accra” study abroad program that can be used to fulfill a number of requirements related to the Global Health minor:

Field Work Experience Requirement for the Global Health minor

  • “Ghana Service Learning Experience” course
    • Available during both Summer and Fall programs.
    • Offered as GLBL or BI 400-level credit (4.00 credits in Summer, 5.00 credits in Fall).
    • “Students will be placed in internship/service learning assignments at various non-governmental organizations (NGOs), healthcare providers, research institutes, and other local agencies, referred to as ‘attachments’ in Ghana, that are designed to complement the global health and development emphasis of the program, as well as to meet the individual interest of each student.”

Social Science/Humanities Elective Credits for the Global Health minor

  • “Ghana Health and Society” course
    • Available during both Summer and Fall programs.
    • Offered as GLBL 300-level credit (5.00 credits).
    • “This course is intended to enhance students’ understanding of health issues within the context of the developing world, with Ghana as a focus. Consequently, the nexus between the health status of the people and their socio-political habitus will be discussed. In this regard, students will be introduced to a wide range of macro issues such as the impact of colonialism, globalization and political economy on the health of Ghanaians.”

  • “Community Psychology” course
    • Available during Fall program only.
    • Offered as PSY 300-level credit (5.00 credits).
    • “This course introduces you to some of the basic principles of community psychology, community research, types and models of prevention, psychological sense of community, and strategies for community intervention and social change. Topical issues such as education, sanitation, and health will be discussed.”

Natural Science Elective Credits for the GH minor

  • “Tropical Disease: Ghana” course
    • Available during Summer program only.
    • Offered as BI 300-level credit (5.00 credits).
    • “This course focuses on infectious and parasitic diseases present in Ghana and will explore aspects of epidemiology; disease progression and pathology; challenges in disease control or eradication; and, as relevant, historical context. Course material accommodates students from all majors.”

  • “Introduction to Epidemiology – West Africa” course
    • Available during Fall program only.
    • Offered as HPHY 300-level credit (5.00 credits)
    • “Introduces the history of modern epidemiology, and provides examples of the uses and applications of epidemiology. Measurement of morbidity and mortality, and a summary of the different types of study designs and their strengths and limitations. An introduction to statistical methods sets the scene for understanding basic concepts and available tools for analyzing data and evaluating the impact of interventions.”

Upon completion of the “Ghana Service Learning Experience” course for the Global Health minor Field Work Experience requirement, students must confirm with the Global Health program that they have completed their experience with a passing grade.
