“Step 1: Find a Program” Details

If you’re looking for a study abroad or international internship experience related to global/public health that you might use towards your Global Health minor Field Work Experience requirement, here are some links, information, and suggested steps to help you get started.

Global Education Oregon (GEO)

GEO (which sits within the Division of Global Engagement at the UO) is the UO’s study abroad headquarters. They offer a wide range of study abroad programs that vary by cost, location, length, and program type. For a complete list of faculty-led, language learning, exchanges, and other programs, please visit the GEO website.

  1. If you want to study abroad, it is important that you do your research and plan ahead. Familiarize yourself with programming available with GEO. Talk to an advisor about your overall academic and career goals, degree completion plan, and desired timeline. Think about program costs and consider how you might fund the program. Complete pre-requisite requirements, if any; many study abroad programs require that you have demonstrated proficiency in the local language before going on the program.
  2. Find a program that aligns with your interests and the Global Health minor. Visit the Global Education Oregon (GEO) “Programs” page. You can search by discipline, country, term, and program type. Here are a few quick suggestions for finding programs on the GEO website that might be a good fit for the Field Work Experience requirement:
    • Select “Global Health” from the “discipline” menu (the first of the four menus on the page).
    • Enter “global health” and/or “public health” into the search bar.
    • Have questions? Request a GEO Advising Appointment! GEO program coordinators are there to help as you try to figure out what study abroad experience might be right for you.
  3. Dig into the program course details and make sure you’ll be able to indicate which 4.00 units of credit you’ll be able to apply to your Global Health minor Field Work Experience requirement (hint: this is a question you’ll have to answer on the required pre-authorization form).
    • For GEO programs (programs that are offered directly by GEO, like UO faculty-led programs or GEO Center Abroad programs), course details should be available on the program page on the GEO website.
    • For non-GEO programs (programs that are offered by non-UO study abroad program providers like SIT, CIEE, IE3, CET), you will need to look up the course details on the program provider’s website (which are sometimes linked to on the GEO page outlining program details).
  4. Found a program you want to apply to? Confirm the experience as applicable to your Global Health minor Field Work Experience requirement by completing the required pre-authorization form.

GlobalWorks International Internships

Confirm with GlobalWorks that you’ll be able to register for at least 4.00 units of credit for “Course #1: GlobalWorks International Internship,” and what those credits will be (what the department code and course number will be).
