Fieldwork Experience in Other Departments

The Big Picture:

Global Health minors with majors in other departments (not “Global Studies,” the “GLBL” department, where the Global Health minor is housed) may be able to use practicum/internship experiences in their “major” department to satisfy their Global Health minor Field Work Experience requirement.

Here are the big picture steps required if you want to pursue Field Work Experience in your major’s department:

  1. First step, review the practicum/internship requirements in your major department and complete any application requirements for individualized study (practicum/internship) experiences in your home department. See below for relevant links to opportunities in Human Physiology, Psychology, Biology, and Environmental Studies.
  1. Next, get Pre-Authorization for your Global Health Minor Field Work Experience and register for GLBL (or other) credit. See below for more details.
    • Pre-Authorization Form Submission Deadlines by term

      • Fall deadline: September 15th
      • Winter deadline: December 15th
      • Spring deadline: March 15th
      • Summer deadline: June 15th
  1. Upon registration for the credits, you must…complete the Field Work Experience! Successfully complete (with a passing “P/NP” grade) the 4.00 units of credit you registered in Step 2.
  1. Finally, confirm your completed experience. Upon completion of Step 3, let the Global Health program know you’ve earned your 4.00 units of credit for your Field Work Experience requirement. Visit the “Confirm Completed Experience” program page for more details.

“Practicum/Internship Opportunities for HPHY, PSY, BIO, and ENVS Majors”

Students should reach out to their major department for more information on practicum/internship experiences available in their home department but, to get Global Health minors started on that path, the Global Health program has compiled the following links to external (non-GLBL) departmental opportunities for some of the most common majors sought by Global Health minors.

  • Practicum Experiences for Human Physiology majors
    • The pathway to “Practicum” information on the Department of Human Physiology website is as follows:
  • Internships for Biology majors
    • The pathway to “Internship” information on the Department of Biology website is as follows:

Notes for Students Seeking to Use Their Major’s Practicum/Internship Experience Towards their Global Health Minor Field Work Experience Requirement

Remember, the Field Work Experience requirement is flexible and can be conducted in Oregon, the U.S., or anywhere around the world as long as it has a global/public health focus and approximates 4.00 credits (120 hours) of engagement.

So, as long as the practicum or internship experience you set up in your major department has a global/public health focus and is not clinical shadowing, then it may be an applicable experience to use for your Global Health minor Field Work Experience requirement.

(See our “Frequently Asked Questions” page if any of these statements bring up questions for you.)

For each external (non-GLBL) opportunity, you will have to:

  1. Follow the instructions outlined on that program/department website for finding and registering for your experience within that program/department (see links to select programs/departments above).
  2. Complete the Global Health Field Work Experience Pre-Authorization Form (see details below).

If you have questions about finding or registering for an experience in another department (outside of Global Studies/GLBL), you should reach out to that department with your questions.

“Step 2: Get Pre-Authorization for your Global Health Minor Field Work Experience” Details

Prior to completing your experience, all students must complete a “Pre-Authorization Form” that must be reviewed and approved by the Global Health Program Director in order to have that experience count towards their Global Health minor Field Work Experience requirement. Read on for full details.

Important Reminder

Completing this Pre-Authorization form will not sign you up for credit in your major department.

As noted on the form:

“In order to register for non-GLBL credit, you must contact the department you are seeking credit from and comply with their registration requirements and deadlines. The Global Health program cannot register you for non-GLBL credit. See Psychology’s Practicum/Internship page, Biology’s advising page (click “Internships” to get info download), Environmental Studies “Internships” page, the Human Physiology program’s “HPHY 409 Practicum Application” linked under their HPHY 409 course listing on their “Courses” page, etc.”

So please make sure that you complete your major department’s required application, credit registration form, etc., whatever is required by your major department for independent study credit registration, in addition to completing and returning the Global Health program’s required Pre-Authorization Form.
